EAA 800 Meeting Minutes
18 Jan 2020

Chapter 800 met at the H.A.W.K. classroom for the first 2020 meeting with President Jim Austin replacing Kim Niebauer who served for three years as president. Vice President Bryan Miller is still in AZ working on his CFI rating.Three guests were included in the 24 present: Stephen Everly, guest of Ken Pedersen; Jeremy Riggle; and Mihai Martin who recently built a home in Loma and would like to find a flying club.

Member Dale Beede asked to speak early so he could go to the Commemorative Air Force meeting. He announced CAF’s UFO [Unusual Flying Objects] Fly-In on Saturday June 13, 2020 at the CAF Hangar area at GJT Regional Airport. He was especially interested in soliciting attendees who would bring their Unusual aircraft.

Bruce Erickson spoke of the up-coming deadline for EAA’s “Ray Scholarship Foundation” where our chapter can recommend applicants for a $10,000 scholarship for flight lessons. There is a HAWK member who meets the application requirements this year and there will no doubt others in future years. Applicants will need an “Overseer” to help with the application package. Randy Owen volunteered to fill that position.

Treasurer Ken Hurt’s report was: $2525.09 in savings and $2930.13 in checking. Insurance and National Chapter dues will soon be paid for a total cost of $425. Secretary Sterling Hurst read minutes of our December meeting. Both treasurer’s report and minutes were approved.

Bruce Erickson recently got his glider instructor rating in FL. He suggested promotion of a glider instruction program for HAWK. A glider would cost less for fuel, but teach basic flight fundamentals to students. .

Sterling Hurst read a letter from Bill Marvel regarding Butch McCain’s daughter Augusta McCain who would like to possibly do a video report on youth activities at the airport for a TV station. Thought: April-May might be a better time since it is warmer and more kids would be out.

Pres. Jim Austin asked for recommendations from members for programs for the year. Shay Boe suggested Leonard Lence, an Inspector who works at WestStar.

Randy Owen recounted a trip when the carbon monoxide [CO] detector that he always carries in his plane turned black in flight. Upon noting the dot had turned black, he opened up the cabin air and by the time he landed, the detector was back to its usual orange color. He had not noticed any odors, lightheadedness or nausea. He had heard over the years that they were worthless, but he verified with that experience that they do indeed work. Needless to say, he recommends each plane have one and that it be replaced yearly. For @ $4, it is a good safety device.

The meeting adjourned for Ken & Jeri Hurt’s delicious pork chili soup!

Next meeting will be February 15th, the 3rd Saturday of January, at 10 AM at Mack Mesa in the HAWK classroom.
